I am currently a financial planner by day but my last career still occupies a lot of my evening and weekend time. I spent 15 years in the car business, the last 4 of those years as a well respected finance manager and have a pretty vast knowledge base of how the car buying process works. I have been helping friends and family thru the car buying process for years. Every time it is over, they always say what a big help it was and how I got them a better deal. Most importantly, my assistance helped them eliminate the fear and hassle part of the buying process. Most people are intimidated by going to a dealership and if a good salesman senses it, they can easily take advantage of it. Like most business ideas, this one came from stumbling into a situation by accident. I recently helped a friend and also helped a family member purchase a car and when it was done, they both mentioned that without my help, they would have left paying waaaaayyyyyy too much and would have gladly paid for my services. Even if all I did was help make the process less like visiting the dentist, without novacane. Hmmmm… Not the first time someone had said that to me. Here’s the question – Would you pay a small fee for someone to help you buy your next car? Do the research, negotiate the deal and help make sure you weren’t getting ripped off. Or, help you with this painstaking process when you are too busy and don’t have the time. Not generic advice via the internet – real, live, in person help. Would you pay a little more to bring someone with you to make sure you are not getting taken advantage of? I have posted this question on several forums and discussion boards and received mostly positive responses. I am really contemplating doing this as a way to make some extra cash from something I was already doing but want to see if people I know would use it or recommend it. Any feedback would be welcome, even if you don’t know me.
